A wonderful surviving Penny Post letter from Peterborough dated 1840.
The penny post system had been running in various forms since 1765 but reforms led to the introduction of the first stamp based penny post in 1840, the stamp being the “penny black” as featured here.
The penny post rate ran all the way through to 1918.
