Class W1 Steam at Peterborough North (1956)

Doncaster based Gresley W1 #60700 climbing out of Peterborough North in May 1956.

This was the sole locomotive in this experimental class that explored the merits of a high pressure water-tube boiler when built in 1929 but unconvincing results saw the engine refitted with a more conventional boiler in 1936.

One year before this image was captured, the same engine derailed north of Westwood Bridge after a collapse of its front bogie frame.
