Peterborough Coal Gas Works

A superb aerial photo capturing the industrial landscape of Peterborough’s Coal Gas Works which was built in the early 1870s and was sited between today’s Dickens Street and Wellington Street.

The magnificent building just left-centre of top was the Retort House that burned the coal to produce the gas that was subsequently stored in the “gasometer” tanks top right.
