W Clarabut & Son, Market Place

Clarabut & Son at No. 4 Market Place, trading as Family Drapers and Silk Mercers.

William Clarabut was born in Kent in 1830 and moved to Peterborough in the 1870s to set up as a Draper employing “45 hands” initially at 8 Market Place. Son Ernest was proudly pronounced on the 1881 census as a “Student of Theology” !

After retiring as a draper, William set up residence just off Thorpe Road where he died in 1915.
