Walton Level Crossing (1970)

The two mainline signal boxes and level crossing at Walton pictured in 1970.
Each box operated its own set of gates and had to work in a synchronised manner which originally became increasingly perilous, regularly trapping cattle heading for nearby Browns Farm between the two sets of gates !
As traffic using the crossing increased with new housing developments, the ponderous big freight trains crawling into nearby New England yard caused long hold ups for traffic. That problem was resolved when the A47 parkway bridge opened allowing traffic a longer but safer route over the line which, in turn, resulted in the closure of the road crossing.
