Westgate c.1908

The lower end of Westgate looking back towards a distant tram turning into Lincoln Road.

The shop on the immediate right belonged to James Harrison Smith who traded under the name of “Postcard Smith” in order to distinguish himself from five other Smiths living in Westgate !

His “Umbrella Hospital” store was quick to cash in on the new craze for buying postcards and he later opened a shop dedicated to postcards further down Westgate next to the Boots store.
